Frequently asked questions

What DCA is, how it is calculated, and what it cannot tell you

What is DCA (dollar-cost averaging)?

Buying a fixed amount at regular intervals, whatever the price that day. Because you always invest the same, you buy more bitcoin when it is cheap and less when it is expensive, and the average price builds itself — no timing required.

How does this calculator work?

It simulates the plan over the real daily series: one purchase at the daily close on each date of the plan, from the start day to today. The current value uses the live spot price; everything else is computed in your browser, on data that ships with the page.

What data is it calculated on?

Daily closes from CoinMetrics Community Network Data, the same source the rest of Bitcoinomics runs on. The calculator starts in 2011, a few months after the rainbow chart: the series opens in July 2010, the week bitcoin got its first exchange, and the market was then too thin for a weekly plan to have been real. No fees or spreads are deducted: this is the clean picture of the price, and real fees would make it slightly worse.

Is DCA a good way to buy bitcoin?

History shows DCA smoothed the cycles' volatility and avoided the risk of going all-in at a peak, in exchange for returning less than buying the bottom — which nobody times reliably. This calculator shows what happened, not what will happen.

Is this financial advice?

No. It is a historical simulation: it describes what a plan would have done in the past. Use it as context, never as a recommendation to buy or sell.
